Oxidized Silver Jewelry
Along with the vintage trend, oxidized sterling silver jewelry is becoming more popular. Oxidized silver jewelry is sterling silver jewelry that is purposely oxidized until it is blackened. There are several methods to achieve this result. The easiest method is to use LOS (liver of sulphur). This solution is available in jewelry making supply stores.
Other method is to use hard boiled egg yolks. The silver jewelry is kept in an air tight container with the egg yolks until it oxidizes. Keep in mind that using this method will not get you the uniform result like using LOS. Some people use this egg yolk method because it is less toxic than using LOS.
Remember that once the silver is oxidized with these methods, it is almost impossible to reverse the process. These methods might also damage or discolor precious stones in the jewelry. Most jewelry makers oxidize their silver before combining it with other materials.
